Church History

Mount Vernon Baptist Church was founded in 1848, 173 years ago. During that time the church has survived seven major wars, one at its very doorstep during the Atlanta Campaign of the Civil War, and numerous smaller conflicts and terrorist outbreaks internationally and domestically. 

It has witnessed 36 presidents, 44 governors and withstood numerous tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, heat waves, wind, snow, sleet and ice storms. It has experienced a country and community that faced civil unrest, racial tensions, one major depression and two minor ones along with numerous recessions. 

It has seen the area around the church change and change again, including what is now  Highway 92 which passes in front of the church grounds going from a dirt path to a major thoroughfare.Yet God has blessed its membership through all those years and Mount Vernon has continued to be faithful to Him and His calling. God has allowed the church to remain in its same location for virtually the entirety of its existence and to be a lighthouse to the community and a source of blessing, strength and encouragement to its members and friends.
